Using Multilingual Approaches
The languages we speak

Multilingualism involves the knowledge of more than one language and does not suggest that you have to be proficient in all of them. The concept of plurilingualism has gained traction in the last 15 years and is defined by CEFR as the ability to use languages for the purposes of communication and to take part in intercultural interaction.

Multilingualism = plurilingualism.

3. how important do you think it is to have knowledge of or about your learners' other languages?

impact of other languages
Learning L1 or other languages can affect someone in learning other languages. It can be helpful but in some ways it might be confusing as well because the similarities and differences.
Some influences from L1 in learning L2:
1. pronunciation: sounds, word and sentences, intonation can be similar or different.
2. register: different cultures and languages may have different mechanism or the way in addressing people who are from different social status.
3. vocabulary: similar words (cognates) or different but have different meanings in different languages.
4. grammar: time and tense may differ between languages or constructed in a similar way but have a different meaning
5. spelling: different sounds/spelling, different alphabet
6. social interaction: how to start and finish a conversation, interrupt conversation without being seen as rude and change subject
7. writing:  layout and writing style

Errors in learning languages:
1. tiredness
2. misunderstanding
3. doesn't know the rule or word
4. wasn't taught very effectively

on the spot correction:
1. self correction
2. peer correction
3. teacher-led correction

advantages and disadvantages of immediate/on the spot correction:
advantages
1. Ss aware their error
2. have opportunity to correct their own error
3. improve accuracy
disadvantages
1. affect learner confidence because feel embarrassed or unwilling to speak
2. Ss may not be able to get their message across due to interruptions
3. negative effect on fluency

raise awareness of differences between L1 and L2:
1. how do you say this in L1?
2. is the way you talk about past moment in L1 similar or different to L2?
3. what sounds exist in L2 that doesn't in your L1? which is the most difficult for you?
4. think about 5 differences and similarities between L1 and L2?

English as global language
1. British empire
2. American imperialism
3. Industrial revolution in 17th century
4. Money talk in 19th century
5. Cultural power in 20th century
