Simple Past Tense

Its form describes actions that were completed in the past. For example, “I visited my grandmother last weekend.” The simple past is typically formed by adding "-ed" to regular verbs, while irregular verbs have unique forms (e.g., “go” becomes “went”).

Affirmative Form:

  • Subject + past verb (regular/irregular) + (object)

Negative Form:

  • Subject + did not (didn’t) + base verb + (object)

Question Form:

  • Did + subject + base verb + (object)?
Adverbs:
yesterday, last week, last month, last year, a week ago, earlier, in 2010 
be careful > quickly, carefully, suddenly, happily
be careful > always, often

Examples

Affirmative:

  1. Regular Verb:

    • She walked to the store.
    • They played soccer yesterday.
  2. Irregular Verb:

    • He went to the party last week.
    • I saw a great movie on Friday.

Negative:

  1. Regular Verb:

    • She did not walk to the store.
    • They did not play soccer yesterday.
  2. Irregular Verb:

    • He did not go to the party last week.
    • I did not see a great movie on Friday.

Question:

  1. Regular Verb:

    • Did she walk to the store?
    • Did they play soccer yesterday?
  2. Irregular Verb:

    • Did he go to the party last week?
    • Did I see a great movie on Friday
