iTELL 2018: Day 1 (Part 2)
As I mentioned in my earliest post about iTELL 2018 that I will have another note on the day 1 of iTELL 2018. At this time, I write about some speakers that I am quite interested in their presentation.

The first is Gumawang Jati. He is an English lecturer at ITB. He introduces many apps that can be used in teaching and learning languages, some of them are free but some of them are premium service. There are some learning and teaching resources for teachers, such as hot potatoes, breaking news, teachingkidsnews, learningenglishteens and britishcouncil,.org. The last one is quite popular and I sometimes use that site as well. He also mentioned some webs that can be used by teachers to design assignment and assessment, such as kahoot, edpuzzle, and onlinequizcreator. Edpuzzle is a web that allows teachers to take any videos from Youtube then upload it into this system and the teachers can create questions based on that video.
There are some apps as well where the students can create their thinking skills and those apps are padlet, timeline (readwritethink), canva, and screencast-o-matic.com. Some apps can be used in artificial intelligent (AI) as well and it is in various sectors. In Math, AI is used in some apps, such as cymath.com whereas the students just need to take pictures of the test and then the result and the way about how to do it will appear on the screen. There is also integral-calculator.com. AI is used as a personal assistant. If IOS has Siri then android has Robin. AI is used in language learning and Orai is an example of it. It is a public speaking app where the students can record can listen. There is also Analyze.academichelp.net/free-grade-my-paper that can be used for free online essay grader to learn the real score.
Some other apps:
- essay-grader: It is a premium app and users need to pay if they want to use this.
-lessonwriter.com
This one is also premium class as well. Teachers just need to upload the text that he/she will give it to the students. The text will be processed by the system and seconds later, teachers will find many types of tests based on the submitted text.
- writingexercise.co.uk

Tape me and learn more
This time I participated in Ms. Itje's presentation and she presented about tape me and learn more. This can be used for those who unsatisfied with time allocated for public speaking and academic speaking class. Her research was for various level competencies (5th semester but their English skills not that good, some of them are good), students meek behavior and can motivate the students.
The purposes of doing her research are to develop student awareness about public speaking class tools in professional and personal life, to maximize learning in students way to develop their self-motivation, students have more time to practice, lead students to find out their own competence and find the gap between where they are and what to achieve (to achieve the LOs), develop digital literacy and critical thinking (Ss can use many apps but they don’t have the attitude to use the apps wisely), make students to realize that technology can help students
Public speaking syllabus: logical thinking, critical thinking; the basic concept of public speaking, organization concept in public speaking; type of speeches, debate concept in English
First meeting: essential skills in the 21st century, the importance of using English properly in public speaking, sites that help students in learning English and make a short video talking about yourself
Process: evaluating and agreeing on the syllabus, assessing students ability and attitude towards learning, students found out from different resources how effective public speaking look like, let students decide about criteria and priorities that they want to achieve first as their personal priority, Students decide how they want to achieve their course objectives, Discussion process’s recorded
Everybody shares the things that they think useful for themselves, minimize psychological barrier (response from friends) and maximize group and paperwork, students record their identity (1-3 minutes) and randomly chosen discussed in the class, 3 minutes recording and 5 minutes class discussion. She allocates seven minutes for exams.
There are some benefits of this activity: Control their body language (learning by practice), eliminate their shyness, Control time when talking, uses the same topics but see it from a different point of view, correct their language mistakes (learning language can be faster if learners are able to correct their language by themselves), spontaneously speaking in public, mental training, enrich vocabularies, assess and correct themselves, be much more confident, more flexible Lecturing session, students can control their own progress and the last one is students how to cite from different recourse

The last one I participated in Erik's presentation. He said that human social interaction can be used as infographic as well. his reasons using infographics are it is easy to deliver the information and make the information easy to read and offers many vocabularies. With infographics, there are many things students can do with that, such as explaining the key features. Apps: canva, visme, befunky, infographic maker, piktochart, infogram, google chart, venngage.
Infographics as a material: students analyze their own works
Ask the students to find the most important part of that infographics and express their ideas.
Students can compare two things using infographics, such as London and Paris.
Students can test about data validity of certain information.
It also helps the student to visualize the time.
Let’s the students to compose an essay/summary from infographic or vice versa
