Development of the TTF TPACK Survey Instrument: A Summary
Hi everyone,
Hope
today runs as you expected. Still with TPACK, this time I am going to write a
summary from a paper entitled development of the TF TPACK survey instrument written
by Romina Jamieson-Proctor (University of Southern Queensland), Peter Albion
(university of Southern Queensland), Glenn Finger (Griffith University), Rob
Cavanagh (Curtin University), Robert Fitzgerald (university of Canberra), Trevor
Bond (James Cook University), and Peter Grimbeek (Griffith University). The
paper was submitted for Australian Educational Computing journal volume 27
number 3, 2013.
The
project (teaching teachers for the future = TTF) is funded by Australian
Government Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) through
ICT Innovation fund. The paper summarizes the development and psychometric
properties of TPACK survey instruments that was developed to use in TTF
project. As we know that TPACK helps teachers and educators to bridge the gap
between research and curriculum design and provide guidance for them in implementing
their ideas. Digital Education Revolution (DER) initiated by Australian
Government recognized that educators need pedagogical knowledge, confidence,
skills, and resources and support them to use online tools to encourage the
students (AICTEC, 2009 p6).
There
are three components in TTF projects and those are extension of the graduate
teacher standards to include ICT dimension associated with national
professional standards for teachers (AITSL, 2011), development of professional
learning packages demonstrating ICT in English, Mathematics, Science and
History, and development of NSN (National Support Network) to create systemic
change in pre-service teachers education relate to ICT. The aim of the research
is to enhance the TPACK capabilities of pre-service teachers.
There
were self-report questionnaires and performance-based assessment to measure
TPACK development in pre-service teachers. To overcome some difficulties in
framing the TPACK questions, Albion, Kamieson-Proctor and Finger (2010) created
a self-instrument to audit pre-service teacher (TPACK confidence survey = TCS).
One of examples in the questionnaire is asking about how the students use the
technology to achieve the learning goals. The survey instrument focused on
TPACK elements that has relation with technology and knowledge. The first
20-item scale was asked the opinion of the pre-service teachers about how
school integrate ICT in curriculum. The second one, there was 24 items to
explore TPK and TCK.
The survey
has seven categories and three of them were labeled as not confident (0),
moderate confident (3) and extremely confident (6). The instrument was
implemented using Qualtrics TM online survey software and administered in
May-July 2011 and October-November 2011 for all teacher preparation program at
HEIs. The parametric analysis was conducted with IBM SPSS v20 and AMOS 20.
The first
step that they did is analyzed to investigate 24-item group. Then, those groups
were anaylised using Rach rating Scale Model (Andrich, 1978; Bond and Fox,
2007). The pre-test scale were duplicated from
post-test data (changes from T1 to T2).
To sum
up, it could be said that TTF TPACK survey was constructed by TTF REWG based on
previous research and instrument to measure TPACK. The instrument was based on factor
structure, those are TCK and TPK, and TPACK. The four factors of TTF TPACK
survey was used to designed about the measure components of TPACK framework. TTF
TPACK survey relates to recent trends and it is suggested that the TTF TPACK
survey is appropriate for digital technologies, curriculum changes and contribute
in researching further TPACK.
